P1/2 open the canal gates at Fort Augustus

What a great day we had today! Mr Wiseman, Heritage Officer for the Scottish Waterways Trust, popped into the classroom to give us a great talk about the canal, its uses and its history. He had some brilliant pictures to show us, not least some that had Ms Scollay and her class in them from just a few years ago.

Even though the weather wasn’t too great, we braved it, wrapped up warm and dry, and headed out to walk up to the top of the flight of locks located just outside the school. Mr Wiseman introduced us to Linda, who told us how the water is let into and out of the locks and also allowed us to open and close the gates…it was a huge thrill to actually move each of the 20t gates.

Thanks so much to Mr Wiseman for coming down to Fort Augustus, and thanks also to all the mums and dads who came along to help make sure we were all safe getting around.
